Marseille and Valencia are Mediterranean cities fighting the same battle: establishing themselves as serious alternatives to their national capitals while preserving the coastal lifestyle that draws people in the first place. Both have invested in landmark architecture (Valencia's Ciudad de las Artes, Marseille's MUCEM), both have vibrant street food cultures, and both offer property at a fraction of Paris and Madrid prices.
